Bundang Jesaeng Hospital Provides Pro Bono Urethral Stricture Care for a Mongolian Patient

Patient suffering from urethral stricture due to pelvic fracture successfully received a urethral plastic surgery through oral mucosal transplantation.

Bundang Jesaeng Hospital (President Jung Yoon Chul) announced that it has voluntarily provided a free urethral stricture and pelvic surgery to Bayarjargal Dorj (Male, age 23), a Mongolian university student. The patient lived with his mother in Ulaanbaatar, and despite his difficult situation, was admitted to the Department of Finance and Economics of the National University of Mongolia in 2018 with a scholarship. While working part-time to save money for his tuition, Dorj got into a major traffic accident.

He had to undergo three surgeries in just one month in Mongolia after the traffic accident as his shinbone and pelvis were fractured. As a result of the fracture of the pelvis, he was diagnosed with a urethral stricture. The patient’s urine had to be emptied from the bladder by using a ureteral catheter from a suprapubic cystostomy. Although Dorj underwent two additional surgeries, it was deemed impossible to improve his condition with the current level of medical skill in Mongolia.

In June 2022, the International Healthcare Team of Bundang Jesaeng Hospital went to Mongolia on a business trip. During this time, Bayarjargal Dorj received free care from Doctor Son Jeong Hwan from the Department of Urology. At the time, Dr. Son said that self-urination without cystostomy would be viable with surgery. However, as the patient did not have money for the surgery, he was unable to receive treatment in Korea. After learning about the unfortunate story, the hospital started a free healthcare project, and decided to provide pro bono surgery for the patient.

Four days after arriving in Korea on July 6th, Dorj successfully received a urethral plastic surgery through oral mucosal transplantation. During his recovery, he felt pain in his left pelvis, and was given interdisciplinary treatment from the Department of Radiology and Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Shin Keun Young from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery stated that the location of the screw that was used for the pelvic correction was causing the pain and inflammation at the hip joint. The patient had to undergo an unplanned supplemental surgery from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Fourteen days after the successful urethral plastic surgery, the patient was filled with great joy as he was able to self-urinate successfully for the first time in three years

President Jung Yoon Chul of Bundang Jesaeng Hospital stated, “I’m very happy to contribute to a bright future for the patient, and hope that he will study hard after returning to Mongolia to contribute to making his country a better place.”

Bundang Jesaeng Hospital, located in Gyeonggi-do, is a renowned, leading healthcare institution that is leading international healthcare with excellent medical staff and healthcare technology.
