Greatly Enhancing the Cure Rate of Liver Cancer with Multidisciplinary Personalized Radiotherapy

Liver cancer patients have a high 2-year survival rate of 85% after radiotherapy

Soonchunhyang University Hospital Bucheon provides multidisciplinary personalized radiotherapy to greatly enhance liver cancer cure rates. Liver cancer is one of the top 10 most common types of cancer worldwide, but is extremely difficult to treat with a very low five-year survival rate of 37%. Patients are generally advised to go through a liver transplant or surgical removal at the primary stage. However, as liver cancer does not show distinct symptoms until there is considerable progress, it is often too late when the cancer is detected. Less than 30% of all liver cancer patients are able to go through surgery. If patients are not able to receive surgery, they are given a number of other treatment options, out of which radiotherapy has been recently shown to be greatly effective for early stage liver cancer, as well as advanced liver cancer that comes with vascular infiltration.

Optimal personalized treatment with cutting-edge, high-precision treatment equipment and a multidisciplinary approach

Last year, Soonchunhyang University Hospital Bucheon became the first tertiary hospital in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, to use “Radixact X9,” a cutting-edge tomotherapy equipment, for radiotherapy for cancer patients. In addition, the hospital provides personalized radiotherapy treatment for liver cancer patients with a team of multidisciplinary medical staff members that consist of radiation oncology, onco-hematology, gastroenterology, surgery, and radiology specialists. Radiotherapy is the most effective treatment available for liver cancer patients, and so the hospital was able to experience a surge in the number of cured patients.

Professor Sun Hyun Bae from the Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology stated, “Recently, due to technological advancements and increased number of clinical cases and research, radiotherapy has placed itself as one of the major means of treatment for liver cancer. The best means of treatment for liver cancer varies by cancer stage, cancer site, and the health condition of the patient, and so it is important to identify the optimal method for each patient with a multidisciplinary approach.” He added, “Soonchunhyang University Hospital Bucheon is equipped with the cutting-edge tomotherapy equipment ‘Radixact X9,’ CT simulator, and various equipment suitable for diverse treatment plans. Also, our team of multidisciplinary medical staff members suggests the best possible means and procedures of radiography treatment for the patients. As a result, the two-year survival rate of liver cancer patients who were diagnosed with early stage or advanced liver cancer and went through radiotherapy at our hospital is very high, at 85%.”
